Update to our username policy

It's hard to believe that it's still less than 2 weeks since The Property Hub opened - I think it's fair to say that both the quality and the number of discussions have totally exceeded our expectations for this stage. So thank you!

The one thing that we didn't properly think through was the names that people post under - and that's what this update is about.

What's changing?

As of 1 February, we want everyone in The Property Hub to be posting under some version of their real name. That means no company names, and no "online names" like "Pixiedust666". Er, not that anyone has actually chosen anything like that, but you get the idea.

We believe that it's easier to maintain the openness, transparency and community spirit that you're striving for when you're talking to "Steve Jones" rather than "Gooner69". This hasn't actually been a problem at all yet, but we want to get it right from as close to the start as we can.

The majority of people already post under their real name (or a contraction of it), so this new policy will just make sure that everyone is doing the same.

What are the new guidelines?

The ideal is to use your full name. But if you're not comfortable doing that, a contraction is fine.

So I might prefer to be "Rob D" or even just "Rob", if the name is still available. Another option would be to use your first name and a middle name.

What about company names?

We don't want you to use your company name as your username or part of your username. But you're very welcome to use your forum signature to give your company details.

What do you need to do?

If you're posting under a name that doesn't meet these new guidelines, you'll need to change the "display name" that your posts appear under.

To do this:

  • Log in and go to the forum
  • Click on your name in the top right, then "My settings"
  • Click "display name" on the left
  • Enter your new display name, and save changes
  • While you're there, add a photo if you haven't already!

Remember that your display name is different from your username. So you'll still use exactly the same details to log in as you do now, but your posts will appear under your new name.

When do you need to do it by?

Please change your name (if you need to) by Sunday 26 January.

We'll then take a look, and individually contact people whose names still don't comply, giving them another 48 hours to make the change. If they still don't change their name, we'll choose a name for them and notify them that we've made the change.

At the moment we can't enforce this policy at the point of people signing up, so you might still see the odd post from new members with unsuitable names. We'll get these changed one-by-one, and hopefully find a way of insisting on it from the start.

Any questions?

If you've got any questions about this change, or are struggling to update your display name, we're here to help - just email our community manager Louise at hello@thepropertyhub.net
