Do I need a consent from a freeholder to change a boiler in a leasehold house?

I would like to change SystemBoiler to Combi in my own property which is a leasehold tenure house. Do I need a consent from a freeholder? Can they actually block it?

Depends what it says in your lease. They are unlikely to block it but they might raise a charge so read your lease first.

Also I'm planning to do structural alterations in the property. I was wondering if it wouldn't be better to purchase a freehold rather than obtain a consent for alterations. 
I'd like to point out the fact it's a house.

Always better to own the freehold IMO but it comes down to cost

The requirement here - as with all leasehold - is RTBL ... it will tell you what you can do and what you cannot.

By the way - it's not your property. It's the freeholder's property ... and you're renting it for an awfully long time, via a lease.
